Roles and Squad Composition

Debt Hunt has no character select and no class system. The roles are how a squad decides who does what in the first ten minutes of the contract. This page is the squad playbook. Solo play is on solo runs. Badges live on badges.

Why roles exist

NZTeam (original Roblox publisher: T0pH4t_Studios) gave us a flat contractor model. Every player can do everything. The only differences are:

  • Gear — what DarkMarket buys you carry.
  • Habits — what you tend to do when the sky turns.
  • Badges — what the studio recognises you for across runs.

A role is the answer to “who is doing what for the next ten minutes.” Calling roles in advance is the difference between a clean Easy extract and a Clutch win.

The seven squad roles

1. Photographer

The camera is a core income path. Master Photographer is 1,000 photos — the studio put a four-digit grind behind it.

Job: photograph photo subjects, not fight. Gear: camera, minimal offensive tools. When to switch: if the squad needs a defender, drop the camera and pick up the gun.

Earns: Master Photographer badge. Cash via camera.

2. Scavenger

Provision Master is 150 supply box opens. Boxes are the fastest day income.

Job: sweep every box pocket in the first ten minutes. Gear: light bag, fast sprint. When to switch: boxes exhausted, become a generalist.

Earns: Provision Master badge. Cash directly from box contents.

3. Miner

Master Miner is 500 mineral ores. Mining is a real career path.

Job: clear on-path ore clusters in daylight, stop before sunset. Gear: pickaxe, lantern. When to switch: sky turns orange. A miner who keeps mining at sunset is a dead miner.

Earns: Master Miner badge. Ore-based income on the loot tier list.

4. Medic / carrier

The official overview art is a teammate carrying a wounded contractor. The mechanic is real.

Job: keep HP topped, carry downed teammates, manage respawns. Gear: medical items, bandages, low-ammo gun. When to switch: the medic is also the natural rally caller.

Earns: By a Thread (1 HP win). Carries other players toward the extract.

5. Shooter / defender

Combat is situational. A shooter defends the rally and clears threats when they appear.

Job: hold the rally entrance, cover the extract rotation, drop the wolf when it matters. Gear: shotgun, traps, horn. When to switch: if the wolf is not at the door, the shooter becomes a generalist.

Earns: damage milestones, monster kills (which do not pay the debt on their own).

6. Archaeologist

Archaeologist is 100 treasures. Treasure mounds are buried loot.

Job: mark treasure mounds on the route during daylight, dig quickly, rotate. When to switch: a treasure alarm exists; do not camp a mound at night.

Earns: Archaeologist badge. Treasures are S-tier loot.

7. Independent runner (solo or assigned)

A player with no assigned role runs the independent route: photos + boxes + early extract, no DarkMarket, no monster hunting. Independent is the badge for completing a contract without DarkMarket. It is also a viable solo play style.

Job: be the early-exit insurance. If the squad fails, the Independent runner already paid the quota. Gear: light bag, camera, basic tools. When to switch: if the squad is in trouble, drop independence and help defend.

How to call roles in the first ten minutes

Voice chat is Not Supported on the Roblox experience page. Calling roles has to work in text and in muscle. The standard script:

[0:00] Squad joins server. One player types "rally?" in chat.
[0:02] Rally caller marks the cabin nearest the spawn. Everyone types "ok" or moves to it.
[0:05] Roles assigned by text:
  "A photo, B scav, C mine, D medic."
[0:08] Photographer runs first circuit; scavenger sweeps boxes; miner takes ore pocket; medic checks rally gear.
[0:10] Everyone meets back at rally with a first quota deposit.

Ten minutes is the rule of thumb. After ten minutes the role call is permanent; you only switch roles on emergency (medic down, monster at door, photo circuit done).

Squad sizes that work

  • Solo (1) — blend roles. S-tier loot first. See solo runs.
  • Duo (2) — one scavenger, one independent runner. The medic and the shooter are the same person.
  • Trio (3) — scavenger, miner, medic/shooter. Photographer is rotated, not assigned.
  • Squad (4) — the full seven roles, condensed. One person covers photographer + archaeologist; another covers miner + scavenger.
  • Larger (5+) — diminishing returns. More mouths to feed, same quota. Add a dedicated shooter, not a fifth scavenger.

What the studio has not published

  • Locked classes or unlock trees. Roles are emergent, not enforced.
  • Role-specific DarkMarket discounts.
  • A “carry more weight” passive that some roles are said to have.
  • A squad matchmaking lobby.

If a future patch adds role-specific mechanics, this page updates. Until then, the badge ladder is the only role system.

How roles change on Hard and Insane

Higher difficulty means:

  • The monster scales. The shooter role is no longer optional.
  • Daytime is shorter. The scavenger and miner compete for the same hours.
  • Independent runner is risky. Extract insurance matters more on a harder contract.

For Insane, treat roles as strict instead of loose. A loose role call is how the squad ends up with four scavengers and no medic on the last night.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Debt Hunt questions.

Are there locked classes in Debt Hunt?

No. NZTeam has not published any class system. Roles are emergent: who does what in the first ten minutes of a contract. Your badge collection is the closest thing to a class.

What is the best role for a beginner?

Scavenger or photographer. Both contribute to the quota without requiring combat, kiting, or late-night rally defence. The Independent runner role is also beginner-friendly because it teaches the box and photo loops.

How do I call roles without voice chat?

Voice chat is not supported on the experience page. Call roles in chat in the first ten minutes: rally, role split, first circuit. The ten-minute scout template is on the run checklist.

Does the squad need a medic?

On Easy, the medic is often the rally caller. On Hard and Insane, the medic becomes mandatory because the monster can down one teammate and force the squad to choose between extract and revive.

Can one player cover multiple roles?

Yes. Duo players cover two roles each. Trio players cover one and a half. The roles are a coordination tool, not a class restriction.
